How to Design Low-Content Planner Interiors in Google Sheets

By Anthony Santos

Planners, habit trackers, and log books are mostly grids, and grids are what spreadsheets do best. If you already know Google Sheets, you can lay out a clean planner interior without buying design software. The catch is that Amazon KDP has strict file requirements, and Sheets wasn't built for print books.

All specs below come from KDP's help pages, linked at the end. KDP updates them from time to time, so check the source before you publish.

Step 1: Pick a Trim Size

Trim size is the finished width and height of your book. KDP's most common US trim size is 6" x 9", but for planners, 8.5" x 11" and 6" x 9" are both popular because they leave room to write. KDP treats anything wider than 6.12" or taller than 9" as a large trim size, which has different printing costs.

Page counts have limits too. For black ink on white paper, both 6" x 9" and 8.5" x 11" start at 24 pages. The maximum is 828 for 6" x 9" and 590 for 8.5" x 11". KDP also rounds your page count up to an even number.

Step 2: Decide on Bleed (Usually Skip It)

Bleed means ink runs all the way to the edge of the page. To print it, KDP trims 0.125" off the top, bottom, and outside edges. Your file has to be larger than the trim size: 0.125" wider and 0.25" taller. A 6" x 9" book with bleed needs a 6.125" x 9.25" page.

KDP only supports bleed for fixed-format files like print-ready PDFs. If even one page bleeds, the whole file has to be set up with bleed.

My honest recommendation: for a Sheets-built planner, design without bleed. Sheets doesn't give you precise control over content extending past the page edge, and white borders are normal for planners anyway. If you want full-page color backgrounds, a layout tool is the better choice.

Step 3: Set Margins KDP Will Accept

KDP's minimums depend on page count and bleed:

Page count Inside (gutter) margin Outside margins, no bleed Outside margins, with bleed
24 to 150 0.375" at least 0.25" at least 0.375"
151 to 300 0.5" at least 0.25" at least 0.375"
301 to 500 0.625" at least 0.25" at least 0.375"

"Outside" here means top, bottom, and the outer edge. The inside margin (gutter) is the edge closest to the spine, and it grows with page count because thicker books curve more at the binding.

The Google Sheets problem: a printed book alternates which side is the spine. Right-hand pages have the gutter on the left; left-hand pages have it on the right. Sheets uses one fixed left and right margin for every page. The simple fix is to set both left and right margins to at least the gutter minimum. For a 120-page planner, that means 0.375" or more on both sides. You lose a little width, but every page is safe no matter which side it lands on.

I'd go a bit beyond the minimums, around 0.5" all around for a short planner. Nobody wants to write in the binding.

Step 4: Build the Grid

Set up one tab per page design, such as a weekly spread, a monthly calendar, and a notes page. Once a page looks right, duplicate the tab instead of rebuilding it.

Size your cells in inches, not guesses

Sheets measures columns and rows in pixels. Export at your target paper size and measure the PDF, then adjust. Lock in a column width and row height that give you about 0.25" to 0.3" writing lines, which is comfortable for most handwriting.

Keep lines and fills printable

KDP asks for lines at least 0.75 point (0.01") thick. Sheets' thinnest border is light, so use the medium border weight or test a proof copy before committing. If you shade header rows gray on a black-and-white book, KDP recommends a minimum 10% grayscale fill so it doesn't vanish in print.

Mind font size

KDP's minimum font size is 7 points. Labels like "Mon" or "Notes" should be 9 to 11 pt for readability.

Step 5: Export a Print-Ready PDF

Go to File > Print in Google Sheets. Under Paper size, choose Custom size and enter your trim size (for example, 6 x 9 inches). Under Margins, choose Custom numbers and enter your values. Set Scale so the grid fits the width, turn off gridlines if you've used borders, and export.

Then check the file against KDP's submission rules:

Upload it, then go through every page in KDP's online previewer. It flags margin problems before you order a proof.

Step 6: Set It Up as a Low-Content Book

When you create the paperback, check the Low-content box under Categories. KDP says books that should have that box checked and don't may be rejected. Low-content books aren't eligible for a free KDP ISBN, so you either publish without an ISBN or use your own. If you skip the ISBN, KDP places a barcode in a 2" x 1.2" white box at the lower right of the back cover, so keep that area clear when you design the cover.
